Welcome back M Street Softball readers and players!
The 2000 season will mark the thirtieth year (1970-2000) of the league's existence.
Ray Flynn and "Bucky" Feeney came up with the brilliant idea of starting a league for returning South Bostonians
who had served in Vietnam. With the guidance of Flynn and Feeney, M Street Softball grew beyond belief in the late
seventies and into the early eighties. In fact, the league was so successful that on many a night one couldn't find
a seat in the packed grandstands. The league even received some national television exposure when they once donated
a large sum of money to the Jimmy Fund before a Red Sox game. Today, the league is in great shape with twelve talented teams expected back for another season of competitive softball. The Sam Moran Club will be back trying to win an unprecedented fifth consecutive title. When the Moran Club opens the season this year you will see a man coaching the sidelines that has been there from the beginning. Over the years, Sam has played in, coached, and commissioned the league. Old "fabizay" is an M Street Softball icon and a very successful one at that. Again this year, look for the weekly M Street Softball article here in the Tribune, keeping you informed on the latest news and league happenings. With the rise in talent continuing, 2000 is sure to be another exciting season. With opening night scheduled for May 25, preparations are starting to be made. The first league meeting will be held this Sunday, April 30, 2000 at 3pm at the Seapoint Restaurant on East Eighth Street in South Boston. Teams that wish to be part of the 2000 softball season must have a representative present. This informational meeting will be used to estimate the number of teams expected for the upcoming season. This is a mandatory meeting for all coaches so please attend! |
