Welcome back readers, players, and fans to the 35th season of M Street Softball. As a tribute to the great history of those that played, sponsored, and helped organize the league before us, M Street softball is one of the very few remaining competitive fast pitch leagues in the state. Where other leagues have folded over the years M Street continues to grow both in size and talent. Staying on the topic of our past and what makes the M Street league great. When the Playwright knocked off Shannon's Tavern in the finals last year, it was the first time in league history that a first year club won the championship. A remarkable feat for the Playwright and a great testament to the continuing strength within the league. Well folks, the Playwright squad are back and looking to defend their title against all challengers. Contending teams like Shannon's, Sidewalk Cafe (2000-2003 champs), Boston Beer Garden, and Il Giardino have all had a full winter to think about how to beat the champs and will get their chance in the coming weeks. Along with many of the 2004 returning teams, quite a few new entries will make their debut this season with each having their sights set on Playwright and the title. The 2005 season will also mark the first season where the M Street League hits the road for a challenge. That's right; the league will be forming an all-star team to travel to tournaments throughout the season with the highlight being a 4th of July trip to Philadelphia. League officials will be looking for talent, dedication, and upstanding citizens both on and off the playing field to comprise this all-star team. With opening night scheduled for May 30, league preparations are being made to make 2005 a great experience for everyone involved. The first of three league meetings will be held this Sunday, April 24th, 2005 at 1pm (note time change) at M Street Park (corner of M Street and East Second Street). Teams that wish to be part of the 2005 softball season must have a representative/coach present. The league is limited to fourteen teams and will take teams on a first come first serve basis with returning teams given precedence. The main topics up for discussion are not limited to but include league fees, playing rules, game times, scheduling, and parking. Have your voice heard and show up to this meeting. Individual players who are looking to join a team this season will have an opportunity to impress league coaches in an open tryout on Sunday, May 1st 3pm at M Street Park. If you are serious about playing then this may be your only chance to hook on with an established team so please make it a point to attend. The league will also create a "free agent" list of interested players to fill in as needed. If you are talented somebody will notice and pick you up so please make it a point to attend this tryout. Also any player, fan, or resident that wishes to express an opinion on league matters may speak with league officials, Brian Ahearn and Mark Senna, before (2:30-3pm) the open tryout on May 1st. We take your concerns seriously and want to make our presence in your community as peaceful as possible. We hope to see you at the park!
