On Monday, June 1 the M Street Softball League will begin its 28th year of play. This season is expected to be more competitive than the last as many of the nine returning teams have loaded their lineups with highly skilled players. Along with these nine contenders are three new teams, Sullivans Pub, Quencher Tavern, and Hub Video, that also have talented ball players and will look to compete in every game.

The twelve team league plays all of its games at M Street Park on weeknights (Mon.– Fri.) starting at 6 p.m. The season runs from June 1 through September 10. Refreshments are available at the field and fan attendance is appreciated.

The league kicks off the 1998 season this Monday (June 1) with three great matches. Starting at 6 p.m., a rematch of last year’s finals has the Sidewalk Café taking on the 1997 champions Sam Moran Club. The middle game, which starts at 7:30 p.m., will mark the return of power pitcher Paul Alessi who is now a member of the Seapoint Restaurant. The Seapointers will try to hammer Mike Medico’s Olde Time Hardware into submission. In the nightcap, which begins at 9 p.m., two young and improving teams Bay View Liquor and Molly Darcy’s will each try and earn their first win of the season.

Also, the league continually tries to improve the softball experience for all players, fans, and coaches. For that reason look for the following this year: a new umpire crew led by Jimmy “Satch” Crowe, a paid official league scorekeeper, and a home and home all-star game with the Parkway All-Stars from the Roslindale softball league. Details, times, and dates of the all-star games will be announced later.

And finally, special hello goes out to former league MVP, Dan Lamonica, who is following M Street Softball from a safe and distant place. Keep the faith Danny.
