M STREET SOFTBALL

It was a week of "firsts" in the M Street Softball League as three previously winless teams picked up their first wins of the season. The Bushwhackers, Playwright, and the Sidewalk Café all broke loose and won their first game of the season. Each of them had suffered late inning collapses that led to some tough losses. Maybe this is where they turn their season around and each make a run for the playoffs.

The week got off to a slow start when heavy rain fell on Monday washing away the three scheduled games. Somebody said it was the Isotopes who performed a rain dance to avoid playing the Greatest Bar that night. The two teams are at the top of the standings in the Moran division so this was a key game that will be made up later in the season.

The league got back to action on Tuesday's with a triple header of games. Coach Justin Holohan and his crew of Bushwhackers got things going early when they pounded out the hits while rolling to a 21-16 victory (their first) over the Ballot Squad. The middle game saw Jeremy Covino (4 hits, 1 HR, 4 RBI) and his Full Tilt bounce Murphy's Law, 12-5. Murphy's earned the split when they rebounded behind pitcher, Jay Malley, and trounced the G-Hits, 22-10.

Wednesday's games saw Ken Starr and the Playwright hold off the Brewers in the last inning for their first win of the season. Brian Dawson picked up the win on the mound for the Playwright. In what turned out to be the game of the week, the Stadium used their last at bats to complete an amazing comeback against El Presidente, 13-12.

With one out and his team trailing by eight runs, coach Paul Gurley sent twelve batters to the plate while scoring nine runs. Gurley himself got in the act when he tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right field. While pitcher, John Gregorio was doing his best to keep the score close, it was Matt Traft's bases clearing triple in the seventh that put his team back in the game. The Stadium than completed the sweep when they breezed to a 14-2 victory in the nightcap.

The game got a little heated in the first game when a Stadium player took exception to the fun the El Presidente team was having while up big in the fifth inning. One can look at his actions in many ways but one thing was for certain; his team rallied and played great from that point forward.

The week concluded on Thursday with the league's last winless team, Sidewalk Café, finally tasting a win when they knocked off the Beer Garden 15-13. You know the competition is tough when last year's champion (Sidewalk) needs to play five games to get their first win. Following the game, the Sidewalk then took on the undefeated Lynx in what became another hotly contested game.

In the third inning, a Lynx player slid into Sidewalk's third baseman, Michael Smith, and opened two gashes on Smith's leg. The sliding Lynx player was wearing metal spikes which have been banned from the league in the past. The Park & Recreation Department has since been asked to make a ruling and the league is deciding what action it needs to take to prevent this from happening again in the future. Oh by the way, Smith stayed in the game and the Lynx held on to the 8-7 win to stay undefeated. The Lynx then followed with a victory over the Beer Garden to conclude the week.

As the league nears the halfway mark of the season, the push for the playoffs has begun. The Feeney Division has a great race going with five teams all within two games of being in first place. The Beer Garden is currently at the top in the division with Full Tilt, Il Giardino Café, Brewers, and Tweeter are all within striking distance. The Ballot Squad and Playwright have both shown recent signs of making a run but will need some help along the way.

The Greatest Bar is still on top in the Moran division as they have solidified themselves as an up and coming team in the M Street league. Coach Kevin Sheppard and his crew are always prepared, in uniform, have youth on their side, and play with lots of enthusiasm. With a two game lead, they will be tough to catch down the stretch. The Isotopes, L Street Tavern, Murphy's Law, and Dorset Club are all jockeying for playoff positions in this division and have key games ahead on the schedule.

M Street Softball is played Monday through Friday with games starting at 6pm, 7:30, and 9pm. The players look forward to seeing you in our stands at an upcoming game.
