This week the action was hot and the standings got tighter in the Moran division. With the second place rival Il Giardino (11-2) club looking on from the stands the first place Seapoint Restaurant (11-1) took the field to play the Brewers (4-6) last Wednesday evening in what turned out to be the game of the week.
Joey Burke took the mound for Seapoint and was opposed by the Brewers Tom Yeo, who had pitched in only one other game this season. This one would be a grind for both pitchers as the game went back and forth and featured plenty of offense. Pacing the Brewers attack was Robin Blatt-Eisengart, Jarrett Britt, and Kevin Coyle who each collected four hits in the game. James Schwartz (3 hits) and Brian Wickett (4 hits) led the Seapoint offense. However, it was Yeo who turned out to be the hero in this one as he pitched eight strong innings for the Brewers and delivered the game winning walk off single in the home half of the extra inning. The victory by the Brewers put their opponents on notice that they are playing well and will be tough to beat down the stretch. Meanwhile, the loss by Seapoint dropped them back to a tie with Il Giardino with only three games to play. In other division news, the L Street Tavern’s playoff chances took a blow last week when they lost 19-10 to the red hot Brewers and 19-6 to the Beer Garden on Thursday. It appears that L Street will have to win their last two games and possibly get help from other teams to qualify for their first post season. More than likely the playoff seeding will not be fully determined until the last pitch of the final regular season game has been thrown. The Moran schedule was abruptly halted on Friday by heavy rains which led to three more games being cancelled. Mother Nature has been difficult to deal with thus far but we are all hoping for a compromise – great weather for the remainder of the summer. As a result of the rainouts and rescheduled games the playoffs will begin a week later (Aug. 7) than previously scheduled. In the Feeney division, the Sidewalk Café and Stadium Sports Bar renewed their long rivalry in a game that started off close but then turned out to be a one-sided affair. Sidewalk took advantage of the Stadium team who was missing many of its star players as they ran away with the 17-7 victory. The two teams may see a lot more of each other as both are on a collision course to meet in the playoffs. With the momentum from the Stadium win Sidewalk then took on the Lynx and were hoping to hand the Feeney division leader their second loss of the season. However, the Lynx had other ideas and quickly took a big lead with a 10 run third inning. But Sidewalk didn’t give up and fought back throughout the game. Sidewalk eventually cut the lead to two runs before finally falling 18-16. After the game, the Lynx (8-1-1) then prepared for a state qualifier tournament that was played this past weekend in Webster, MA. The top teams in the N.E. region participated with the winning team getting a guaranteed trip to the A.S.A. Nationals in Decatur, Alabama – the World Series of Men’s softball. The Lynx proved that they can play with the best as they won all three games they played on Saturday. My past experience tells me that avoiding that first loss and staying undefeated in the winner’s bracket is the key to winning these tournaments. Two other teams, the Riptide (Burlington) and the Legends (Fairhaven), were also undefeated with the Lynx and they would all face each other on Sunday. Coach Danny Ekasala stated that his team may have enjoyed their success a bit too much as they didn’t have their game legs when Sunday morning rolled around. The Riptide team took advantage of the weary group and handed the Lynx a 9-3 defeat. Now in the losers’ bracket the Lynx would have to regroup and beat the Legends, another difficult task. However, it wasn’t to be as the Legends squeaked out a 2-0 victory to put them into the finals with the Riptide and end the Lynx’s run. Proudly, South Boston residents Marty Jimenez and Jason Allen are members of the Lynx and both took part in the tournament. Coach Ekasala added the Jimenez had an unbelievable weekend for the Lynx (they finished in third place) as he provided clutch hits and great defense all weekend long. The Lynx with all of their tournament stars including Allen and Jimenez can be seen during the week at M Street Park. League games are played Monday-Friday starting at 6pm, 7:30, and 9PM. We hope to see you there! |
