With eight weeks gone by the M Street Softball League is about to enter the stretch run. Key match-ups that will have a major impact on the standings will be played over the next three weeks. As of this writing, five teams (Murphy's Law, Sidewalk Café, Quiet Man Pub, Seapoint, and Quality Painting) have a legitimate chance of finishing the season in first place. None of these teams have the inside track with a weak schedule as they will have to face one another on the softball diamond beginning this week. Game times are 7pm and 8:30 pm Monday through Friday. Come up to M Street Park and catch a game or two.

Playing the role of spoiler, Molly Darcy's upset Mirisolas' 5-2 on Monday night. Much-improved pitcher Bobby Noto, finally got some defense behind him which enabled Noto to quiet the veteran bats of Mirisolas'. Two night's later, Noto and Molly's where at it again when they had Seapoint Restaurant on the ropes in the bottom of the seventh inning. Molly's had just tied the score at four off of a bases clearing double by Todd Whelan. Steve Talent, who represented the winning run, then ran for Whelan and tried to score on a single to right center. Talent was out at the plate on a close play and the game was sent into extra innings. Seapoint then took a one run lead in the eighth when they strung back-to-back doubles together Brian Ahearn and Jim Burgio. But Molly's couldn't answer the bell as they went down quietly in the bottom of the eighth allowing Seapoint Restaurant to avoid the upset and win its second game of the week.

Earlier in the week, Seapoint knocked off the upstart Quality Painting 5-2 behind Jay Malley's four-hitter. David Kenneally struck a big blow with a two-run double in the fifth inning. Pat Sullivan and Timmy Malley also contributed to Seapoint's offense with a pair of hits each.

On Tuesday, on of the better games in recent memory was played between the Sidewalk Café and the Quiet Man Pub. Before Sidewalk could catch its breath they were behind 7-0 as Quiet Man's hot bats went to work. But Sidewalk answered back with two scratch runs in the second and when Pat Egan smacked a two out double that scored three runs in the third, the large seven run deficit was no more. Quiet Man then went ahead by a run in the fourth on hits by Steve Muldowney and Tommy Cherry. Sidewalk rallied again in the sixth with a clutch hits by Tommy Connolly and Jack Levangie. Yours truly tried to score from second on a single to left center and was thrown out at the plate by Robbie Rogers to preserve the tie score. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Sidewalk watched another golden opportunity go by the boards. With runners on and one out, third baseman Terry Flaherty made a great stop on a hard hit ball that was destined for left field. Quiet Man then used the momentum off of that great play to score a run in the top of the eighth to take a 9-8 lead. Sidewalk managed to get the leadoff hitter (Egan) on but then couldn't move him as Quiet Man held on to the hard fought victory.

On Wednesday, the Boston Beer Garden helped their playoff chances with an 8-7 win over the Sam Moran Club. The McElaney brothers, Eddie & Danny provided key hits for the Beer Garden. Newly acquired pitcher, Jimmy McNiff earned his first victory. McNiff, who has been a successful pitcher in the past in the league, could make a big difference for this very talented team.

On Thursday, first place Murphy's Law may have been looking past the fifth placed Quality Painting team and it cost them. Quality came out with their A-game as they scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back. Pitcher, Ruben Alicia looked very impressive on the mound for QP as he mixed his fastball with a changeup. The only bright spot for Murphy's Law was a sensational catch by rookie right fielder John Martin. Martin was in full stride when he caught up to a sinking line drive in deep right. John is the younger brother of teammate Chris and is the cousin of Quiet Man's very talented hitter - Rob Rogers. Rob's dad or John's uncle, Jack Rogers also plays for Murphy's Law and is a consistent .400 hitter year after year. It very obvious that the softball genes are very good in this family and that young John will continue to impress his teammates and opponents in the league.

Looking forward to this week's key games has another rematch of last year's finalists - the Sam Moran Club vs. the Sidewalk Café playing tonight at 7pm. Friday's early game should also be an interesting game when Quality Painting takes on Murphy's Law. Murphy's will be looking to revenge last week's 11-0 humiliation. Tuesday, August 1 at 8:30 pm, Sidewalk vs. Murphy's Law. Sidewalk dropped a 14-8 decision to Murphy's earlier in the year. Have a great week!
