M STREET SOFTBALL

This past week was a short one for the M Street Softball League but nevertheless there were some exciting moments and great games. The week also marked the return of the Moran Club and another revision of the league schedule. The latest version of the schedule should have "REVISED 6/18/2000" at the top. If you need a new schedule please see me at the park. Now it's time to take a look at last week's games.

On Monday, the Sam Moran Club started the week off with an impressive 5-0 win over the Quiet Man Pub. Although the Moran Club isn't fielding the same nine as last year they still looked very impressive. Moran's pitcher Steve Lannon earned the complete game shutout allowing only three hits in his seven innings of work. The game marked coach Sam Moran's first appearance at M Street Park this season and his presence was felt. Sam has been associated with M Street Softball since its inception and this season wasn't the same without him.

Monday's late game saw Mirisola's pound the winless Libertarian Party by a score of 20-3. Pitcher, John Gregorio, cruised through seven innings to earn the victory for Mirisola's.

Tuesday's heavy rain forced the postponement of the two scheduled games. These games will be made up on August 11th.

Wednesday's early game featured a spirited battle between Molly Darcy's and Murphy's Law. Molly's had just rallied on hits by Sean Thomas, Jamie Cahill, and Wally Fromm to tie the score at four in the fifth inning and were looking to take the lead. With runners on first and second, Sean Linnell hit a sinking line drive to right field that looked like it was destined for extra bases.

But Murphy's rookie right fielder John Martin made a great shoestring catch to end the threat and keep the score tied. Murphy's then put two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth and went ahead on a sacrifice fly to center field by Jack Rogers. The centerfielders throw home got away from Molly's catcher and the runner on second base also scored on the play. Murphy's pitcher, Paul Lawrence then went out in the top of the seventh inning and got the three outs he needed to record the win for Murphy's Law.

The late game on Wednesday featured an interesting scenario between Mirisola's and the Sam Moran Club. Mirisola's pitcher John Gregorio was making his first appearance against his old teammates - the Moran Club. John was a high school athlete when he hooked on with the M&M Club (Moran and McGrath) in 1986. He spent his next fourteen years with them and won an MVP honor and several championships. He must have had mixed emotions when he strolled out to the mound on Wednesday.

In the end, it was the Moran Club who overcame their emotions and held on to a 7-6 victory behind their veteran pitcher John McGrath. Brendan Flynn and Ronny Gurley each knocked in a pair of runs for the Moran Club as they improved their record to 4-2.

On Thursday, the Quiet Man Pub extended the Libertarian Party's losing streak to eight games when they handed them a 14-2 defeat. Manny Arruda earned the victory for the Pub and youngster Joey Magee chipped in with two homeruns, one from each side of the plate. Brian Linehan (3 hits, 2 RBI) and Rob Rogers (2 hits, 1 HR, 3 RBI) also contributed to the winning cause for the Quiet Man Pub.

Thursday's late game was expected to be a great game between the Seapoint Restaurant and Murphy's Law. But instead, it was Murphy's who were great as they exploded for fourteen hits on their way to an impressive 10-2 victory. The win improved Murphy's record to 7-2 and put them in sole position of first place. Mike Smith (2 hits 3 RBI), John Martin (3 hits, 2RBI), and Jeff Brown (3 hits, 2RBI) provided the offense for Murphy's.

With the Fourth of July holiday now past us, the league resumes play tonight at 7pm with the Seapoint Restaurant taking on Mirisola's. The 8:30 game features the Boston Beer Garden taking on the Libertarian Party. Games will also be played this Friday (July 7th) starting at 7pm with the Sidewalk Café and Molly Darcy's followed by Quality Painting and the red hot Sam Moran Club. Come up to the park and enjoy a night of competitive softball.
