There's no telling who will be up or who'll be downward as both divisions in the M Street Softball League begin sorting out legitimate contenders from soon to be spoilers. The Bayside Club of the American division and Old Towne Tavern of the National loop own the league's best records with identical 8-2 records. Yet, the way teams turn on each other, one week of inconsistencies will smother the lofty heights these front runners now enjoy. Proof goes no further than the Bobby Ford Club's failings last week. The Ford men have been at the top all season until they became unraveled and were shot down by the Square Cafe, 5-2, and the resilient Canavan's Pub, 6-2. That double dose of dejection left the Ford Club in fourth place and perhaps thinking more of the teams behind them than those they were recently involved with. Bayside stretched its winning streak to six, with a rousing comeback win over Murphy's Electric, 9-8, and a solid all araound performance in curtailing the Square's harried attempt to sneak back into playoff contention. Bayside bopped the Square, 8-1, after the Square handled the Ford men earlier in the week. In other games, Canavan's with a dangerous 6-1-2 record, was tied by Broadway Haircutters and then speared the Ford Club. Teamster's have not played in two weeks so its 5-1-1 mark looks impressive, although the backlog of games could rapidly change their outlook. The 201 Club won its third game, beating the Knights. Old Towne rode another outstanding pitching effort to a 1-0 victory over Triple O's, dropping the defending champs into third place in the National League. The YIP's took a week's vacation and reamin one win behind Old Towne's 8-2 mark. Triple O's is at 6-3. Old Harbor humbled Connely's, Triple O's used everything it could find to stop a charging Sam Moran Club 19-18, Shamrock Pub sneaked past Manning's, and Old Harbor trapped the Rabbit's into a 5-5 deadlock. The Moran marauders then did stage a successful rally catching the Connelly Club 15-13. Also, the league will be asking for any generosity from the fans to help keep those lights shining for the late night games. The softball action is worth the nickles and dimes folks! |
