The rainy weather continued to wreak havoc on this year's schedule as last Tuesday and Wednesday nights games were rained out. It wasn't the first time that this has happened, as a total of twenty-two games have been washed away so far this year. As a result, the league will begin playing make up games on Tuesdays and Fridays. Turning to the games that were played last week, the Sidewalk Café had its engine firing on all cylinders as they knocked off the previously undefeated Sam Moran Club 8-2 on Thursday. The much anticipated game, which featured the two finalist from last year, was all Sidewalks as they collected thirteen hits, played flawless defense, and got a strong pitching performance from newcomer Steve Lannan. In the fifth inning, the fans in attendance were treated to a pre-Fourth of July fireworks display. As the fireworks exploded in the sky above, Sidewalk's Tommy Connolly did a little exploding of his own on the field below. With one out and nobody on base, Connolly connected on pitcher John Gregorio's two-and-one offering and sent the ball soaring to deep right-center. Outfielders, Brendan Flynn and Charlie Joyce gave chase but to no avail as Connolly circled the bases for an inside the park homerun that all but finished off the Moran Club. The Sidewalk players poured onto the field and the victory celebration began. In other league action, Sullivan's Pub earned its second win of the season by defeating Bay View Liquor 6-3 on Monday. Richie Linehan, who was on the mound for Sully's, kept the Bay View batters off balance and frustrated throughout the game by varying the speeds and locations of his pitches. Sullivan's took advantage of some poorly played defense in the second inning as they scored five runs on only three hits. Steve Flaherty contributed with his bat (two hits) and glove as he made several outstanding plays at shortstop for the improving Sullivan's Pub. Elsewhere, Olde Time Hardware held on for victory in a tight game played against the Boston Beer Garden on Thursday. Entering the seventh inning, Olde Time led by six runs and was in complete control. But after a leadoff walk, followed by Dominic Shiner's double, Brendan Smith's triple, and Chris Neff's single, the game was suddenly slipping away from the Hardware boys. Pitcher Ruben Alicia fought back and managed to retire two of the next three batters on groundouts. The last out wouldn't come easy as Beer Garden's Rob Rogers, who leads the league in homeruns and who represented the lead run, stepped into the batters box. Like clockwork, Rogers promptly smashed a double down the left field line that scored one and put the lead runs in scoring position. Olde Time's coach Mike Medico, who was now grimacing on the sidelines, couldn't bear to watch his pitcher work to the next batter. The tired Alicia would have to dig deep as he began his work against the ninth batter of the inning. With a two-strike count, the Amtrak worker put everything he had into a fastball which was popped up and easily handled by second baseman Pat Lavey for the games final out. Breathing a sigh of relief, Medico happily made his way to the mound with a grin big as a slice of watermelon. |
