Last week the Chippewas Sporting Goods softball team won the South Boston Softball League championship for the second year in a row by beating the Joyce Club of the American League in three straight games.

Both teams made it through their playoffs in their league to setup a rematch of last year for the Joyce club but the results were the same as Chippewas blitzed them in three straight for the title.

Having an outstanding playoffs was Jom Rooney, coming up time and time again with big hits and also making some outstanding plays in the field which won him the MVP of the playoffs.

Winning MVP for the season was Fred Melchione, who played outstanding ball on the field all year long.

But no team can win without their pitcher and the Chippewas had two good ones in Marty Donlan and Bob Tyler, who combined for a record of 23-5. Other players who came up with big hits for the chippewas was coach Jerry McGrath, who came to bat in the last of the seventh and got ahot to win game one, Joe Casey, who won game three with a hit in the bottom of the seventh. Joe Ronca, Rocky Melchione, Bobby Sullivan, Jim Jones, Bobby Lerro, and the most feared hitter in the league, Jack Farrell rounded out the lineup for chips.

The league would like to thank Mr. Baxter for the fine job he did in keeping the offial scor book.
